Discover the rich customs and ancient traditions of NSW North Coast’s Traditional Owners. From Aboriginal-guided walking tours to fascinating art galleries and exhibitions, there are plenty of authentic cultural experiences along this breathtaking coastline.
On the Coffs Coast in Gumbaynggirr country, the Yarrawarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre has an exceptional indigenous art gallery and Bush Tucker Cafe. Top off your visit with an eco-cultural tour on a stand-up paddleboard with Wajaana Yaam Adventure Tours.
The Macleay Valley is home to the Dunghutti-Ngaku Aboriginal Art Gallery, where you can admire and appreciate the works of established and emerging indigenous artists from the region. Nestled in gorgeous parkland, this gallery offers a vivid insight into the traditions and evolution of indigenous artwork.
Further south in Newcastle, admire contemporary Aboriginal art at Newcastle Art Gallery. Nearby the award-winning Lake Macquarie Museum of Art and Culture is home to a number of significant indigenous works as well as a sculpture park, mosaic pathways and cafe.
Enjoy a cultural adventure exploring the spectacular Worimi Sand Dunes with Sand Dune Adventures. Roam the largest moving coastal dunes in the southern hemisphere on 400cc quad bikes with an Aboriginal guide. You’ll visit ancient campsites, learn about local bush foods and medicines, and experience the thrill of riding over the dunes.
Learn local Dreaming stories on a Gaagal Wanggaan National Park Tour while tasting some bush tucker. The Gaagal Yuludarla (Ocean Dreaming) Tour is a 1.5hr walk at beautiful Scotts Head, and the Gaagal Wanggaan Tour is a 2.5hr walk through serene bushland and beach.
