Culcairn is a beautiful town in The Murray, adorned with tree-lined streets, pretty parks and heritage-listed buildings. Head along to a traditional rural show, discover colonial heritage and bushranger tales, and enjoy cycling, nature and golf.
Once a major rail junction during the era of steam trains, the heritage-listed Station House Museum houses intriguing railway history and memorabilia. Wander the streets of Culcairn and you’ll find more history, including the Culcairn Court House and Culcairn Hotel, once the largest hotel on the Melbourne-Sydney railway
Notorious bushranger Mad Dan Morgan roamed the area during the 1860s. In June 1864, Morgan's stand-off at Round Hill Station in Culcairn resulted in the death of station overseer John McLean. You can visit the hiding spot Morgan used to evade police capture, Morgan’s Lookout, and the John McLean Memorial.
Wilksch Estate Wines is a fourth-generation family-owned property situated at the foot of the Great Yambla Range. Their first vines were planted next to the homestead in the early 1920s and today you’ll find a delicious range of unoaked styles. For delicious pastries, cakes, slices and coffee, visit the popular Culcairn Bakery. Meanwhile for pub fare and an expansive beer garden, head to Culcairn Hotel.
Enjoy produce, art stalls and horse shows at the annual Culcairn Agricultural Show, held every October. Another way to experience the delights of Culcairn is by bike. The Culcairn Bike Track is a shared path that takes in historic buildings, pastures and Billabong Creek. Other things to do include a round of golf at Culcairn Golf Club, a nine-hole course.
Culcairn is a 7.5-hour drive from Sydney and around four hours from Melbourne. It’s a 35-minute drive from Albury and an hour from Wagga Wagga. Alternatively, you can travel by train from Sydney and Melbourne, or fly to Albury and rent a car.
