Howlong
Couple enjoying a picnic along the banks of the Murray River, Howlong
Gorgeous river scenery, beautiful colonial buildings and a superb golf course. On the banks of the majestic Murray River, Howlong is a great base for fishing and boating adventures, as well as exploring the nearby Rutherglen wine region, just over the border.
Discover the town’s rich heritage on the Howlong Historic Trail. The self-guided tour covers 28 locations, including the former flour mill and residence, Mill Hotel and Old Howlong Post Office (which also offers accommodation for a boutique stay in the heart of town). You can pick up a trail map from the Howlong Community Resource Centre or the Corowa Visitor Information Centre
For water fun, cast a line into the Murray River or paddle the meandering waterway in a kayak. Or simply relax by the water at Lion's Park or Howlong Memorial Park.
Got kids in tow? At Lowe Square, you’ll find a swimming pool, playground, tennis court and barbecues.
Enjoy a round of golf on the magnificent 18-hole course at the Howlong Golf Resort. Howlong also hosts a number of amateur golfing tournaments, including the Top of the Murray Classic in May and the Murray Masters Amateur Golf Tournament in December.
After teeing off, grab a bite to eat at one of the golf resort’s restaurants – Fairways Bistro serves pub-style favourites and Szeto Asian Kitchen offers Asian fusion.
Other delicious options in town include the Courthouse Kitchen in the historic Courthouse Hotel, 1/2 Acre Coffee Lounge & Nursery for breakfast and cafe-style lunches, and the Howlong Country Bakery for hot pies and other baked goods on the go.
Howlong is just under six hours’ drive from Sydney, 3.5 hours from Melbourne and a 25-minute drive west of Albury. You can fly into Albury Airport and rent a car for the short drive to Howlong.
